  8.   This tip is for those who use

  10. printers with ribbon cartridges. I
  11.  
  12. have the C. Itoh Prowriter, an
  13.  
  14. excellent printer all in all, except
  15.  
  16. the ribbon cartridge has an average
  17.  
  18. lifespan of about 2 months. These
  19.  
  20. things go for about $8 a shot, so I
  21.  
  22. figured there has to be a cheaper
  23.  
  24. alternative.

  26.   An ad in Power/Play for ribbon
  27.  
  28. reinking machines (for about $70) got
  29.  
  30. me to thinking: can I re-ink the
  31.  
  32. ribbon myself?
  33.  
  34.   So I got a bottle of ink, an ink
  35.  
  36. pad and went to work. It was a little
  37.  
  38. tedious, but 20 minutes work paid off:

  40. The result was much better than a
  41.  
  42. brand new cartridge. Those cartridges
  43.  
  44. probably sit around on the shelf for
  45.  
  46. months, drying up. My manually
  47.  
  48. re-inked cartridge gave a nice dark,
  49.  
  50. sharp image on the paper.
  51.  
  52.   All I had to do was turn the manual
  53.  
  54. crank on the cartridge while holding
  55.  
  56. the ink pad against the ribbon with
  57.  
  58. my finger (which I wrapped with a Glad
  59.  
  60. Bag to prevent a nasty stain). Try
  61.  
  62. it!  With some practice you will be
  63.  
  64. able to do it without getting much
  65.  
  66. ink on you. It helps to lightly clamp
  67.  
  68. the cartidge in a vise, to hold it
  69.  
  70. steady.
